Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards was booed Friday night during a surprise appearance in the middle of a John Mellencamp concert in Des Moines. Sean Hannity reported on his show today that the singer stopped in the middle of his song “Small Town” and introduced Edwards stating, “This guy’s from a small town and he just so happens to be running for president.”
Edwards was met with a few cheers but largely found the audience hostile. What should have been a campaign coup by appearing at a rock concert in the important primary state turned into a major embarrassment for the candidate as the ‘boos’ forced Edwards to cut his statements short.
Edwards was no doubt further embarrassed by Mellencamp’s call for the legalization of marijuana. Reportedly the singer stated that his generation had failed to legalize the drug and that the current generation needed to be more compassionate. Compassionate? At any rate Edwards wisely refrained from making any remarks about Mellencamp’s idiotic cause.
Here’s a tip Senator Edwards- Don’t rely on show biz types to help you with your campaign. Instead, stick to your principals and solid political ideas. (Sorry Senator- you may be in trouble.)
