IT'S FUN WATCHING AS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY DESTROYS ITSELF
The fight between Obama and Hillary is getting nastier and nastier by the day. Republicans should rejoice as these two powerhouses of the Democratic Party, one supposedly representing the new spirit of the party, the other undoubtedly representing the failed policies of the 1990s, pull out the political nukes against each other. This means less money and less credibility for the eventual Democratic nominee in November’s general election.
Bill Clinton has wisely pulled back his kinetic campaigning for his wife lately. The former president and compulsive womanizer was further tarnishing his questionable legacy by his attacks against Obama and his lashing out at reporters. During the Nevada primary Clinton erroneously claimed that culinary workers’ votes would be counted five times as much as any other voters. When one member of the press challenged his math Clinton lashed out, surrendering his usual cool, before the cameras. Such outbursts, along with Clinton’s questionable race comments, prompted Democratic heavyweights like Ted Kennedy to tell the former president to knock it off. Kennedy now supports Obama.
Even despite her recent wins in Ohio and Texas, Hillary Clinton’s camp continues to have the reek of desperation about it. This desperation is evident in her recent remarks that indicate her willingness to share the ticket with Obama- with herself in the top spot no doubt.
This prompted a response from Obama- “I’m in first place and I’m not running for vice president… I don’t know how somebody who’s in second place (can be) offering the vice presidency to somebody who’s in first place.” Obama also went on to say, “If I’m not ready (to be Commander-in-Chief), how is it that you think I would be such a great vice president?”
Only Clinton arrogance would allow her to assume that her second place in the primaries would let her dictate to the party’s apparent choice.
But Hillary has a major credibility issue. She has no executive leadership experience and has made a major plank of her campaign her attack on Obama’s lack of experience. In her pathetic attempt to prop up her foreign policy credentials she falsely took credit for helping to end IRA violence on CNN last week. Kevin Cullen of the Boston Globe put it best when he said, “To suggest Hillary Clinton was a major player in ending what the Irish in their penchant for understatement call the Troubles is like saying Eleanor Roosevelt played a big role in ending World War II.”
Hillary was also recently attacked by Australian feminist Germaine Greer who called Hillary “Cold,” “Bossy” and “Manipulative.” According to Yahoo News she went on to say, “I can’t see that Hillary would appeal to feminists because, why is she there? She is there because she is Bill’s wife and it’s a bit useless to pretend, ‘Oh it’s because of her wonderful job as a senator.” Greer followed that up with an attack on the Clinton marriage, saying it was more of a business partnership than an emotional relationship. “They give me the creeps,” she said.
Indeed, why would any true feminist support this woman who stands behind such a phony of a husband, a man whose true legacy won’t be for any supposed presidential accomplishment, but for a lifetime of womanizing and a sexual dalliance in the Oval office?
And then there is the latest outrage from the Hillary camp- the recent comments by Hillary fundraiser and former Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro. Ferraro stated in the Daily Breeze of Torrance, California on Friday that, “If Obama was a white man he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman of any color he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”
Again race is brought into the campaign to explain away Obama’s lead. First Bill’s pointed remarks, then the questionable timing of the appearance of a photo of Obama in traditional Somali garb, and now this. I suppose it’s just not possible that Obama, regardless of his politics, has real star power and is a perfect 180 from Hillary’s frigid authoritarian demeanor. It’s not enough that Hillary belatedly came out against Ferraro’s remarks when the backlash began. If she were serious she’d ask Ferraro to step down. That won’t happen because Ferraro’s views are the unspoken consensus of the Hillary camp.
And what of Obama? Clinton is correct when she says that Obama has no leadership experience, but of course neither does she. Obama is often compared to a young Jack Kennedy in terms of experience. Remember what happened when Dan Quale made the same comparison in 1988? But again its Obama’s star power, his all-style-and-little-substance approach that has won him so much support. His one word message of “Change” only goes so far. Surrender to Al-Quaeda would be “Change.” I doubt we’ll see Obama attempt to nail down exactly what “Change” is before the election. Heaven forbid he provides concrete goals that might pin him down to an actual position.
All of this political infighting between two inexperienced political rivals is tearing at the very fabric of the Democratic Party. This is occurring largely because neither is ultimately presidential material. One is a vindictive dirty tricks politician, the other an attractive political novice with few if any clear convictions or goals for the country.
And finally, as though the Hilbama war wasn’t enough, the Democrats now face the political fallout from the illegal and immoral activities of New York Governor Elliot Spitzer. This soon-to-be-political-has-been reportedly spent up to $80,000 on prostitutes over the course of a ten year period, according to the New York Post, and is expected to resign within the next few days.
While scandals of this nature are hardly confined to the Democratic Party, (remember last year’s Larry Craig fiasco?), Spitzer’s actions reflect poorly on his party at this critical time. This is an election where hopeful Democrats are salivating at the thought of taking back the White House after eight years of George W. Bush. Come November Spitzer’s disgrace will put Hilbama on the defensive, even as they declare that it’s a non-issue. In contrast Craig’s indiscretion will be long forgotten.
All this illustrates a Democratic Party in meltdown mode which will no doubt benefit Senator McCain in his quest for the presidency this November. If the Democrats are foolish enough to take their nomination race to their convention, no amount of money or political grandstanding will win them the White House in November. But the alternative, that Hillary would stand down gracefully, even if it meant accepting the VP slot on the ticket, assigns to her a selflessness and humility that she simply does not possess.

I hear McCain might be
I hear McCain might be eyeing Condi Rice for his VP.
