LOOKS LIKE THE SUPREME COURT WILL PROTECT GUN RIGHTS
The Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday relating to the constitutionality of Washington D. C.’s thirty-two year old handgun ban. Thankfully, the justices seem to be leaning on the side of liberty this time.
Chief Justice John Roberts asked, “What is reasonable about a total ban on possession?” Alan Gura, a lawyer representing a Washington citizen challenging the ban stated, “It’s unreasonable and it fails any standard of review.”
Justice Anthony Kennedy stated early in the proceedings that the Second Amendment to the Constitution gave Americans “a general right to bear arms.” Kennedy, along with Justices Roberts, Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia, and Clarence Thomas are likely to form a majority on the nine-person court. Their statements have encouraged pro-gun rights activists and many believe this is the first step on the road to striking down the handgun ban.
“What I heard from the court was the view that the D. C. law, which prohibits good people from having a firearm… to defend themselves against bad people is not reasonable and unconstitutional,” said NRA leader Wayne LaPierre. Vice President Dick Cheney has also recently come out fervently against the D. C. ban.
Thank you President George Bush for appointing justices like Roberts and Alito, judges who will interpret the Constitution honestly and correctly and not try to push their own agenda on America. God bless the USA and the supporters of the Second Amendment!
