REVIEW: GLENN BECK'S AN INCONVENIENT BOOK

The Glenn Beck program, the third most listened to radio show in the country, has long been known as not your typical conservative radio show. What has endeared Mr. Beck to listeners is his unflinching desire to tell the truth as he sees it, his sticking up for traditional American values, and his stance that there is no issue that should be decided right or left, just right or wrong. What makes his latest work, “An Inconvenient Book”, so remarkable is how easily he is able to capture the feeling of listening to his radio show within its pages.

As one would expect with a title such as “An Inconvenient Book”, global warming and “pudgy, Oscar winning, noble laureates”, are taken to task, but not in the way that you would expect. One of Mr. Beck’s main objections to the global warming debate is the fact that no debate is being allowed. As Mr. Beck puts it “Most people never hear honest questioning on this issue because, when it comes to global warming, dissent has its price”. That becomes a theme for Mr. Beck throughout the book. Later in a chapter linking political correctness and Islamic extremism, Mr. Beck concludes that “political correctness is killing us” and we need to be able to openly talk about issues without being labeled a “racist or an islamophobe”.

Some of the topics Beck addresses make for some real laugh out loud moments such as the chapters on tipping at restaurants, ageing, and how choosing the right movie to see on a date with your wife “directly affects the future of the human race”. Others are thought provoking and, at times, invoke feelings of frustration, such as the above mentioned chapters on radical Islam, Political Correctness, and illegal immigration. One of the main points that Mr. Beck is always making on his radio show is not to just take his opinion, or any one else’s for that matter, as fact. We should research these important issues on our own and make come to our own conclusions. With clear facts and a biting wit Mr. Beck gives the reader an opportunity to make up his/her own mind on the issues and provides a rare and unique perspective on American society and politics.

From Mr. Beck's trademark humor, to his incredibly well researched arguments, and yes, the occasional ADD moment, Mr. Beck captures the essence of his program beautifully. Loaded with graphics, side comments, and random facts and quotes, it is the kind of book you can open to at any page and find something fascinating and funny.
